If you look at the past 1000 years, we appear to be in a serious down trend. Right now for whatever it is worth, it does look like we will be down again this year. The trouble is you have some very smart people with political and monetary agendas that understand how to manipulate the masses of sheep that are the public very easily using the same techniques that Carnies use to get people to play games on the midway. It is not that tough unfortunately. The real bad part is that trillions of dollars will be wasted on what amounts to a big con game. If it drops the same amount next year, I'd have to agree with your analysis. I think a lot has been accomplished in the last 50 years in protecting the environment (reduction of acid rain, protection the destruction of lakes, toxic chemical isolation), but there is still more to be done. I care more about my environment than whether or not some dumb people can purchase an RV and ATVs and go vacationing every summer. I don't especially care about their AnF, Coach, WMT or their retirement either. But perhaps that makes me somewhat of an elitist. As for Al Gore, I think he's an asshat. But I also think the people who say ANWR is going to save us are extremely misleading (and I'm not saying you're suggesting that as our best route to economic safety). Nuclear sounds good. Solar when less expensive will be nice. We'll see how things turn out, but, as you suggest, we can't have politicians pussy-footing around the facts.
